Powerful European clubs like England and Portugal did not! The US was in a group of death. No one expected us to survive it…but, we did!

14. I will always remember this game, specifically Dempsey's goal. I was 10 years old and was at a bar with my dad, and my friend and his dad. I remember the ball being played to Dempsey, and he jumps over it and gets it under control. He shoots and it goes in off of the far post, and the whole place goes ballistic. I think about this moment all the time, it's such an amazing memory

Clint Dempsey’s goal is still the 5th fastest in World Cup history, and is interestingly, one of only 2 on the top 10 list from the 21st century (the other being the record holder, Hakan Suker in 11 seconds at the 2002 World Cup). Most of the others come from the early decades of the World Cup, when the goal scoring rate was much higher.
