USWNT stars on why talks with U.S. Soccer broke down so quickly

U.S. soccer stars Megan Rapinoe and Christen Press are gearing up to take the fight for equal pay to the courtroom. Mediation talks between the U.S. Soccer Federation and the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team broke down Wednesday after just one day. In March, the players filed a lawsuit alleging institutionalized gender discrimination. A spokesperson for the players said it is clear the federation «Fully intend to continue to compensate women players less than men. They will not succeed.» U.S. Soccer did not respond to a request for comment. Team co-captain Megan Rapinoe and Christen Press join “CBS This Morning” to discuss why talks broke down so quickly.

  1. I am not american and i know most of the uswnt but i know none of the us men soccer team. it's because the uswnt has achieved many things and the best in the world unlike the men's team. so i think uswnt should get paid highet

  2. Good that this has been dismissed from court ,these woman are lying ,they were offered the same deal as the men as a starting point for pay negotiations and chose to go for a lower risk CBA and get higher base salary and benefits ,now years on AFTER success (no risk) they want the riskier pay deal the men had.
And on top of that they actually got more money than the men's team for the same time this is n unjustified money grab.
I suggest in future all money generated by the men's and women's team is kept separate and used only for their side of the sport , after a couple of years the women's team would be gone for lack of funding as they rely on cash from the men's game.

  3. I genuinely can't stand Megan Rapinoe and how she genuinely believes she deserves equal pay. Just like most businesses in life, YOU ARE PAID A FAIR SALARY BASED ON THE INCOME YOUR BUSINESS GENERATES. She is reportedly paid just over $168,000 dollars a year in salary. Reign F.C's average attendance for 2018 was 3824. I don't know how much tickets are but lets just say its $20. This generates a home game income of $76,480. Let's say merchandise sales etc. are pretty similar (because lets face it your not Ronaldo or Messi no one outside of the U.S.A gives a flying toss about you to be quite honest). Based on these numbers and considering that (although she wouldn't like to believe it) there is a full playing staff, coaching staff, office staff, sales staff etc to pay for and stadium costs, maintenance, promotion etc to pay for I'd say $168,000 dollars salary a year is pretty reasonable don't you? Not to mention all the sponsorship deals you get and the opportunity to travel the world playing the sport you love for free! Just to put this into perspective the average MLS attendance is 21,053 which based on $20 ticket prices would generate $421,060 per home game. Quite a difference isn't it. The males also do so much better in terms of merchandising because they have global superstars like Ibrahimovic. People outside of the U.S.A will buy their merchandise not just Peggy-Sue and her family from South Dakota.
This argument needs to be put to bed soon and I think Rapinoe knows all this but she just loves the sound of her voice and having TV time

  4. There can be no negotiations when all you do is whine, complain and demand. All salaried are determined by income and if there is no interest in women's soccer, there is no pay. They want the millions that football players make? Go play football. It is simple yet she has the affection of the liberal media to help her further her cause. What she will end up doing by forcing them to pay, is to sell or close women's soccer. She will mature one day but not until soccer is gone.

  5. Women are not as good as men when it comes to sport, so unfortunately most are not gonna get the type of attention garnered by the world's top players at the highest level of sport…which happens to be men. If you are top of the world..then yes…but JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE WOMEN is actually an insult….cos you're asking for special treatment…

  6. The gender pay gap on the macro scale (across the entire US population) is a myth with no supporting evidence. This doesn't mean, however, that there are no women being discriminated against based on their gender. We, as a society, must do everything in our power to fight for equality.

What these women are doing, going on National Television and attempting to deceive the American public, is actually hurting real women who are being victimized because it's makes it less likely that real claims of discrimination will be taken seriously. If you are in favor of equally, standing in support of these women won't achieve IT.

  7. i agree. separate but equal will never result in true equality. just have soccer, not men's soccer and women's soccer. that way the best players on the field will be compensated by the free market.

  8. The talks broke down so quickly because the female players aren't living in reality. Men's soccer is boring enough already to American audiences because we want a time crunch or a clear winner, and women's soccer is even less active. Worse, soccer allows ties and has no time limit on ball possession, so a team can take all the time it wants to set up a perfect run on goal or run out the clock passing amongst itself. In stark contrast, basketball has a shot clock, football a play clock, hockey is lightning fast and has 2 min penalties, MMA is a match of 15 to 25 min. Basketball, football, and hockey have OT, MMA has a 3 judge decision if no TKO.

  9. Hard to compensate when the womans national team is losing money. Like 28 million dollars worth. I mean based on their proposals, they might actually be making less than they are now if its market based compensation.

  10. They live in country with the best infrastructure in the world for the women's game, making it possible for a full time career. A lot of aspiring female players around the world don't that luxury. Their minimum guaranteed base salaries alone put them in the world's top 0.1% of earners. They sound really ungrateful and self entitled if you ask me.

  11. I love the USWNT but I don't know where they want the money from… you look at any NWSL game and those stadiums are empty. You look at a game at Camp Nou (FC Barcelona) and it doesn't matter if they're playing against Real Madrid or Getafe it always has 50,000+ people. Can't really demand equal pay when there's no "equal revenue". It's basic math…

  12. Why couldn't they answer the simple question at the end.

The Men's sport bring in billions of dollars in revenue, the women's sport brings in millions.

Do they honestly think the court will allow them not to answer that question? They better come up with a reason why they should be paid as much as men if they don't generate nearly the revenue.

US soccer came out with a fact sheet talking about all of the facts, why can't the women supply something similar?

In order to solve this they should just let the women play on a men's team if they qualify for it. I mean, they say the same thing.

  13. For some reason, people promoting radical feminist agendas have trouble understanding basic mathematics, economics & biology. The women in soccer still only play the the level of average teenage boys. The US women's team, who are ranked 1st internationally, lost 5-2 to the under 15 boys of FC Dallas, who's professional men rank 636th at club level. The best women's national team lost to the U15's of a mediocre men's club team. That's why viewership and attendances are much lower for women. Lower demand means lower ticket prices. Lower ticket prices with lower number of tickets sold means lower revenue. A company can only pay it's personnel from the revenue generated to sustain long term. The US men generate $970k per game on average, while the US women manage an average of $420k per game. The last three women's world cups generated $250m combined, while the men's tournaments amassed a total of nearly $14 BILLION.

  14. If you are a in a legal dispute why are they going on national TV about the case? They do this because they know they have no case because the numbers clearly show they don't bring in enough money outside of world cups to be paid the same as men. So what they do is try exploit American ignorance of the sport to get public opinion on their side because the actual numbers don't support this request. The men get paid more because they are a top 20 team in a trillion dollar sport worldwide and US women are the best team where there are only 3 other countries in the world with fully professional teams. There just isn't the money in female soccer worldwide to get a return in investment like the men. No one in the media points out that the US women are already the highest paid female team in the world. I personally think the US Soccer Federation instead of playing the US women unsustainable wages, they should concentrate in getting more working class Black and Latino girls into soccer, because if they don't European teams will surpass them in the next 4 years.

  15. Too bad the players feel that they hold the cards in a business situation, and try to force their position down the throats of the people on the other side of the table. Clearly the players know that if they push for 'no play', the response will be "fine… don't play". Using the political jackboot approach is wearing out quickly, in entertainment, sports, and politics in particular.
