In the United States but also in Canada, Japan and Australia, “football” in the English sense of the word is called “soccer.” But do you know why this word is only used in these countries?

It could have been completely different! You will find out that the word “soccer” very nearly became the word of choice in Europe as well.

  1. I'll tell y'all the real reason why it's called American football is called football in the U.S. That's because the ball they use is a foot long. In the US, they use a different measuring system than meters. They use inches, feet, yards, and miles. And the American football is 12 inches long, which converts to one foot. Thus, football. It should've probably been called throw ball or something to be honest. When I first moved to the US it used to piss me off whenever I heard the word 'soccer'.

  2. The British English is the best form of english, because they are the inventors of english, not americans. So, English authority over the english language should be considered by everyone in the world.

  3. We go crazy because we invented this game where you play with a BALL and your FOOT and called it Football and you people years later came up with a sport were you use HANDS and just dumbly called it Football we dont even now why LMAO and then started calling football soccer because they have socks , imagine we start calling American Football JOCKSTRAPPER like idiots lol

  4. The word for football was named for any sport played on your feet (which is why Rugby had the name Rugby Football, it is a game played on your feet). This is the same reason why American Football is called Football, based off British ideas of the time, any game where you played on your feet was called football, as opposed to what the upper class which was polo and horse racing. Football was a poor man's sport, but it meant any sport that was played by the feet. Which is why Rugby Football and Association Football took its names, since they were both just called Football originally. As for the idea of calling our version of football American Rugby, it isn't Rugby, we play Rugby here too (though it isn't something you normally see), they're extremely similar but 2 different games, so it would be wrong to call it that.

  5. A sport where BALL "HAND"-LING is oftenly/mostly used, they call it FOOTBALL. How idiotic. How lame.

The players of that sport should've been called SUCKERS.

    Americans in a nutshell
