'Football' vs 'Soccer' – WHY the war of words?

Some call it «football» and despise the word «soccer». Those in the “football” camp are likely European, and resent those in the US or elsewhere that simply cannot get the name of their beautiful sport correct. And those that call it «soccer» hate it when people say «football», which to them is a completely different ball game. Finally, there’s a third group: people like us here at Kick off!, who want to get to the bottom of this war of words. Why all the hate over a simple name?

  1. I have no problem with Americans being good at football. It's not a european sport. It's the same for me if America or Brazil or Italy wins. All of that just means my country didn't win. As a rule of thumb among Europeans there is nearly no european patriotism.

  2. Football was invented 4 century's before Christopher Columbus descovered the Americas. Easy to know which is right using this very important point.

  3. Soccer is valid, it is a synonym of football.

I think, people are mainly offended due the fact that Americans call their trash sport "football".

I'm South African, and we use both terms to describe the sport. Based on British tradition, the terms soccer and rugga was used to differentiate between the two types of football games. Soccer is to association football, in the same way that rugga relates to rugby football.

  4. Europeans: Americans are so arrogant, they always expect the world to be like them
also Europeans: I dunno change the name of the sport we don't watch so you can say the same name for the sport we invented

  5. Absolutely wrong. Does the video propose the idea that people are irritated by the use of the word "soccer" because it is the only form of culture that the US does not dominate? Pathetic, extremely condescending and totally wrong. There are at most 5 high quality American players in Europe and the US team is nowhere near the best in the world.

  6. The word soccer was made by posh English middle class, they took the word with them to the new found land.
What I dont get is why call it football when majority of the time you're using hands, the logic dont make sense lol

  7. It doesent matter that the Word soccer is from England. It was many years ago so stop saying that. And what is the Logic with calling a sport where you run and throw a ball football and calling a sport where you use your feet soccer. To be honest i dont Even know anymore with these americans. They always make things different then the rest of the world
